Getting out of the US cloud: PixelUnion offers an alternative to Apple iCloud and Google Photos, with 16 GB of free cloud storage hosted in the EU.

The demand for European alternatives to US-based cloud services is growing louder. Some of the most sensitive data includes photos and videos taken with smartphones, which reveal a lot about our daily lives. Most users rely on built-in services from Apple or Google. Alternatives often carry the reputation of lacking features or being overly complicated. PixelUnion — developed by a Dutch company of the same name — proves that this stereotype no longer holds true.

The service uses the open-source photo platform Immich for its commercial offering and claims to contribute actively to its development.

Photos and videos can be uploaded via the browser or mobile apps for Android and iOS, and are then available online. The interface closely resembles Google Photos. PixelUnion explicitly aims to provide an EU-hosted alternative to store private media comfortably online — but outside the reach of major US tech companies. Its servers are located in Germany, with backup servers in Finland, all within the European Union.

While you can host Immich yourself, using a preconfigured hosted service is much easier. PixelUnion offers 16 GB of free cloud storage — 1 GB more than Google — which is enough for several thousand photos. If that’s not sufficient, you can upgrade: 150 GB costs €2.95 per month, 1 TB is €9.95. Apple and Google offer slightly larger plans for similar prices.
